A One – day workshop on “Material characterization Techniques and Electron Microscope” was conducted by FDD team on 04.01.2017 for the faculty of physics at Cute Hall, Paavai Engineering College. Dr.S.Vadivel, Head of the Department and Dr.A.Panneerselvam Associate Professor of Physics of Paavai Engineering College were the resource persons.
The first session was handled by Dr.S.Vadivel on the title “Material Characterization Techniques”. He introduced the relevance of TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis) and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) in the field of Physical sciences. He listed out the application of these techniques with regard to environmental measurements, composition analysis, product reliability, stability, chemical reactions, & dynamic properties of materials.
The second session was handled by Dr. A.Panneerselvam on the title “Electron Microscope”. He stated that these microscopes have now been adapted to operate under the guidance of computers which make sample viewing, photograph storage and labelling, as well as micrograph analysis in the field of research and development. He also added that scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) are extremely useful tools for the study of engineering materials.
In the last session, feedback was given by our faculty members ensuring the relevance of the programme. The workshop provided an occasion to know about the application of Material Characterization in engineering studies. The faculty felt inspired and they came out with a request that similar workshops of these types on different concepts could be conducted for the benefit of the faculty who in turn would teach effectively those areas in the classroom.
Dr.K.Selvi, Dean Academics, welcomed the gathering and suggested that the faculty members should make use of the opportunity to develop their knowledge and expertise.
Dr.R.Kasthuribai, Dean Faculty Development, and Dr.S.Sukumar, Dean Civil encouraged the faculty. The program was a successful one as there was a lot of interaction among the faculty.
