The Faculty Development Department conducted a two-day in-house Faculty Development Programme on the title, “Power Electronics” for the EEE faculty on 08.05.2017 & 09.05.2017. The resource persons were Dr.A.Rathinam, Mr.M.Raja, Mr.K.Arutselvan and Mr.S.Ramachandran. The faculty members of EEE department of Paavai Engineering College, Paavai College of Engineering and Paavai College of Technology attended this FDP. Dr.M.Premkumar inaugurated the FDP and stated that the faculty members consider should the domain related FDP as a forum to discuss the various topics in the subject. Dr.R.KasthuriBai Dean –Faculty Development, Dr.K.Selvi Dean-Academics and Dr.S.Sukumran, Dean Civil Engineering were present during the session and supported the faculty members.
The first session on 08.05.2017 was handled by Dr.A.Rathinam on the topic “Introduction to power electronics & Inverters”. Int his session he gave a brief introduction about the power semiconductor devices and a detailed review on the comparison of the different power semiconductor devices. He also elaborated on the basic operations of inverters, types of inverters, multilevel inverters and the practical applications of inverters were also given. The next session was handled by Mr.M.Raja on the topic, “Phase Controlled Rectifiers”. In this session he explained about single and three phase semi and fully controlled converters. He focused on how to derive the average output voltage for the different types of converters. Technical aptitude questions were also solved.
On the second day, the first session was handled by Mr.K.Arutselvan on the topic “Choppers”. He enumerated various choppers such as step down choppers, step up choppers, different classes of choppers and commutation choppers. This session included animations enabling a clear understanding of the circuit operations. The members solved of technical questions of types frequently asked in GATE exams. The next session was handled by Mr.S.Ramachandran on the topic, “AC voltage regulators and Cycloconverters”. He gave a detailed explanation on the operation of AC voltage regulators and Cycloconverters.
The hands-on training on Power Electronics principles using MATLAB took place in the afternoon sessions. The faculty members were able to simulate and verify the outputs of circuits learnt in the theory sessions.
This two day FDP was an exclusive forum to discuss and extend the knowledge of faculty members in the Power Electronics field. It was sure that the faculty members have got a clear idea regarding the ways and means of explaining the subject with an in-depth knowledge to the students.
